OHS (BOZP)

7 otázok

What is OHS (BOZP) and why is it mandatory for every company?
OHS – occupational health and safety – is a set of legal, technical, and organizational measures that every employer must implement under Act No. 124/2006 Coll. The goal is to prevent workplace accidents, occupational diseases, and other health damage to employees. OHS obligations apply to every employer without exception – regardless of headcount, industry, or company size. Non-compliance with OHS is an administrative offense punishable by a fine of up to €100,000.
Does every company need a safety technician?
Yes. Under Act No. 124/2006 Coll., every employer must ensure the performance of safety technical service (BTS). This can be done through an in-house safety technician or through an external specialist – a certified company like Alpha Safety. External BTS is more cost-effective for most SMEs, eliminating costs of a dedicated employee while guaranteeing professional, uninterrupted coverage.
What fines are imposed for non-compliance with OHS regulations?
Penalties for OHS violations are severe. The Labour Inspectorate can impose fines of up to €100,000 for serious violations and up to €200,000 for repeated offences. In addition to financial penalties, responsible persons face criminal liability, obligation to compensate injured employees, and reputational damage. Investing in OHS is always significantly cheaper than the consequences of neglecting it.
What does your comprehensive OHS service include?
Our comprehensive OHS service includes: preparation and maintenance of mandatory OHS documentation, workplace risk assessment, training of employees and supervisors, regular safety inspections, handling and investigation of workplace accidents, representation during Labour Inspectorate audits, preparation of emergency plans, and setting up or reviewing your existing OHS system.
How does the first OHS inspection at our site work?
The first visit begins with an initial audit – our safety technician familiarizes themselves with your operations, work processes, existing documentation, and identified risks. Based on the audit, we prepare a report with specific recommendations and a corrective action timeline. We then set up the entire OHS system including documentation and train your employees. The whole process runs smoothly without unnecessarily disrupting your operations.
How often are regular OHS site inspections conducted?
The frequency of regular OHS inspections depends on the risk category of your operations. For standard offices and low-risk sites, quarterly inspections are sufficient. For production facilities and higher-risk workplaces, we recommend monthly or bi-monthly checks. The law requires a comprehensive OHS review at least once a year. We schedule all visits in advance according to your operational needs.
Do you represent us during Labour Inspectorate audits?
Yes, representing clients during Labour Inspectorate audits is a standard part of our service. Our certified safety technician will be present throughout the entire inspection, communicate with inspectors, and protect your interests. Thanks to years of experience, we know what inspectors focus on and ensure your documentation and operations are fully compliant in advance.

Fire Protection

5 otázok

Is fire protection (OPP) mandatory for all companies?
Yes, fire protection is a legal obligation for every employer and legal entity under Act No. 314/2001 Coll. on fire protection. The extent of obligations depends on the building's classification (without increased fire risk, with increased risk, with high risk), but basic obligations – documentation, employee training, and equipment inspection – apply to all entities without exception.
What does comprehensive fire protection service include?
Our comprehensive OPP service includes: preparation and updating of fire protection documentation (fire safety regulations, alarm instructions, evacuation plans, fire protection log), regular preventive fire inspections, training of employees and fire protection officers, inspection and revision of fire extinguishers, internal hydrants and other fire equipment, and coordination with the Slovak Fire and Rescue Service.
What penalties apply for non-compliance with fire protection regulations?
The Slovak Fire and Rescue Service may impose fines of up to €331 on individuals and up to €16,596 on legal entities or entrepreneurs for OPP violations. For serious violations causing a fire or damage, responsible persons may face criminal prosecution. Regular OPP maintenance and up-to-date documentation is essential protection for every business.
When do fire extinguishers and hydrants need to be inspected?
Fire extinguishers must be checked at least once a year and serviced according to manufacturer instructions, at most every 5 years. Internal hydrants and hose systems are regularly inspected – pressure tests every 5 years. Fire doors and shutters undergo annual inspection. We track all deadlines and arrange timely inspections so you never miss a statutory deadline.
What is a workplace fire safety manual and how do you prepare it?
A workplace fire safety manual is a fundamental OPP document defining rules for employee conduct in fire prevention and during a fire. It contains a description of the workplace, a list of fire hazards, measures to eliminate them, responsibilities of supervisors and fire protection officers, and instructions in case of fire. We prepare it individually for each workplace based on a personal inspection and in line with current legislation.

Occupational Health

4 otázok

What is the Occupational Health Service (PZS) and who is it mandatory for?
The Occupational Health Service (PZS) is mandatory for every employer with at least one employee under Act No. 355/2007 Coll. on the protection, promotion, and development of public health. PZS includes monitoring working conditions, assessing employees' health fitness, evaluating health risks at the workplace, and preventive occupational health check-ups. Employers with category 1 or 2 workers can provide PZS through an external provider.
What health check-ups must employees undergo?
The type and frequency of health check-ups depends on the work category (1–4) and workplace risk level. Pre-employment check-ups are mandatory for all new employees before starting work. Periodic check-ups are repeated regularly according to risk category. Exit check-ups are required upon termination if the employee worked in a hazardous environment. Extraordinary check-ups are conducted after a workplace accident or occupational disease. We coordinate the entire process with the appropriate physician.
What is the frequency of occupational health check-ups by work category?
Frequencies set by the Public Health Protection Act: For categories 1 and 2, Act No. 355/2007 Coll. does not generally require a periodic examination (it is performed only where a special regulation requires it); for category 2 with exposure to carcinogenic, mutagenic or reproductively toxic factors, once every 3 years. Category 3 – once every two years. Category 4 – annually (once a year). Special categories such as work with chemicals, noise, vibrations, or biological agents may have stricter requirements. Our experts will advise you on the exact obligations for your workplace.
What happens if an employee refuses a health check-up?
Under the Labour Code, an employee is obliged to undergo occupational health check-ups ordered by the employer. Refusal may be grounds for dismissal or for reassigning the employee to less hazardous work. Upon repeated refusal, the employer may terminate employment. We are happy to advise you on how to handle such situations correctly in accordance with applicable legislation.

Training & Courses

6 otázok

What training is the company legally required to provide?
Every employer must provide: initial OHS training for every new employee before starting work, periodic OHS training at least every 3 years, annual OHS training for supervisors, fire protection (OPP) training for all employees, and training for fire protection officers and fire brigade members. For work with special machines, equipment, or substances, additional specialized professional training with authorizations is required.
How often must OHS and fire protection trainings be repeated?
Basic OHS training for employees must occur at least every 3 years (more frequently recommended). Training for supervisors is mandatory at least annually. OPP employee training must occur at least every 2 years. Training for OPP officers and fire brigade members annually. In case of significant changes in working conditions, technology, or legislation, extraordinary training must be conducted immediately. We track all deadlines and notify you in advance.
Do you offer e-learning and online OHS training?
Yes, we offer a modern e-learning system available in 5 languages (Slovak, English, German, Russian, Ukrainian). E-learning is ideal for companies with many employees or multiple sites across Slovakia. Employees complete training online anytime and anywhere; the system automatically generates completion records, significantly simplifying OHS and OPP documentation management and saving HR departments valuable time.
What professional courses with authorizations do you offer?
We offer certified courses ending with an examination and issuance of an authorization for: forklift operators, scaffolders, construction machinery operators, electricians (§21, §22, §23 of Decree No. 508/2009 Coll.), forestry machinery operators, chainsaw operators (timber harvesting and other activities), mobile elevating work platform operators, agricultural machinery operators, load binders, and lifting equipment operators.
Do participants receive certificates and authorizations after completing a course?
Yes. After successfully passing the final exam, each graduate receives a professional certificate or certificate of professional competence, valid throughout Slovakia and recognized within the EU. We issue documents in accordance with applicable legislative requirements. For electricians, we issue certificates under Decree No. 508/2009 Coll. Training completion records are maintained in digital form for OHS documentation purposes.
Can training take place directly at our company premises?
Yes, all OHS and OPP training, as well as most professional courses, can be held directly at your premises. On-site training is more effective as it targets the specific risks and conditions of your workplace. For the practical part of certain courses (e.g., forklifts, scaffolders), a certified training centre may be required. We adapt all schedules to your operational and shift requirements.
