ENVIRONMENT – Waste Management

The waste management system represents a comprehensive set of activities within a company, the main goal of which is to minimize the amount of waste generated and ensure its proper handling. We focus on procedures that reduce the negative impact of waste on the environment – soil, water, air, fauna and flora. Rights and obligations in this area are governed by Act No. 79/2015 Coll. on waste.

The waste management system represents a comprehensive set of activities within a company, the main goal of which is to minimize the amount of waste generated and ensure its proper handling.

Legal obligations in waste management

Legal and natural persons doing business in the Slovak Republic must fulfill obligations arising from Act No. 79/2015 Coll. and related implementing regulations. The main obligations include:

keeping records of waste, processing permit applications, registrations and reports
fulfilling extended producer responsibility obligations – for packaging, e-waste, batteries, vehicles, tires, non-packaging products
fulfilling the duties of waste originator, holder, broker or trader in accordance with legislation

Risks in waste management

The most common shortcomings in practice include:

incorrect waste classification according to the Waste Catalogue
incorrectly maintained records or improper waste separation
improper handling of hazardous waste or chemicals
diluting or mixing waste to reduce the concentration of hazardous substances
unauthorized discharge of waste into sewers or surface waters
illegal accumulation or storage of waste beyond the statutory periods (a maximum of 1 year before disposal, or 3 years before recovery, §14 of Act No. 79/2015 Coll.)
failure to notify the transport of hazardous waste
failure to submit the mandatory report to state institutions
operating without statutory consent, missing waste-disposal certificates
not being a registered entity in the registers of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic, illegal waste incineration
